5). Was there ever a two party Presidency?
In the election of 1796  John Adams of the Federalist Party, who was George Washington's vice-President, was elected into office of President of the United States. Thomas Jefferson of the Republican Party was elected as vice-president of the United States.

Back then electors were to vote for two men. The one with the most votes became president and the one with the second amount of votes became vice-president.
In this case the two were from two different parties, Republican and Federalist parties.

Soon after the laws were changed and Presidential Canidates picked their own vice-presidents, so that the matter never happened again. The Federalist Party was finally over thrown because it leaned too much to the English ways of government. Although Federalist Party had secured the adoption of the Federal Constitution; they had made the national government strong; and they had begun the work of paying the national debt in full, and so making the credit of the government good.

No party had ever done a better job in bringing a bankrupt, disorderly confederacy into a firm union. However in the election of 1800, John adams was the Federalist candidate again for a second time, but he was defeated and the federalist party was never able to elect another predident.

The Republican Party held more to the eqaulity of men; they trusted the people, and believed in progress toward a larger personal liberty. The Federalist party made us a nation, but the Republican party made us Republicans and Americans.
7). What exactly does it say in the Constitution regarding the seperation of church and state?
Most people in this country have never actually read the constitution and its amendments, and learn through pure hearsay especially the very debated subject of the seperation of church and state.

The first Amendment states exactly the following "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of press, or the right of people to peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances"

So basically they can make no law respecting nor prohibiting the exercise or establishment of religion.  The words "seperation" "church" and the word "state" are not even mentioned in the first amendment.

The notion that you can't have anything religious on local, state or national government property is based on the people who did not read the constitution, and not at all of what is written in the constitution. If there was to be no religious expression on anything of local, state or National Government property, we would  have no churches anywhere, because everything resides with in a state. Our money would not have the words "In God We Trust" , the President would not be sworn into office with his hand on the bible and the constitution may not have ever existed its self.

I encourage everyone to read the Constitution and know it well. It will serve you well through out your life, I gaurentee it. You may, as I have purchase a pocket Constitution for $1. each from the Cato Institute by either writing to:

6). Other than slavery what were the causes of the Civil War?
Although there were a great many factors which gave birth to the Civil War, one of the factors in which finally made it inevitable was the result of the election in 1861 that lit the powder keg of war.

In 1860 the Democratic Party was divided between north and south. The mojority in the convention of that party nominated Stephan A. Douglas, of Illinois, the author of the Kansas Nebraska Bill. The Democrats who adhered most strongly to the south put forward John C. Breckinridge, of Kentucky.

The Republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln, of Illinios. Lincoln was elected bringing the angry debate between the north ans the south to the breaking point.
Which the Southern Democrats knew there was now no territory left at the South from which new slave states could be made.

Soon after the Union was broken and the United States headed by Republican Abraham Lincoln who would soon abolish slavery completely, faced off in a war against the Confederate States of America lead by Democrate Jefferson Davis, who favored the slavery of blacks so much he was willing to divide the country and cause the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives on both sides.

But as Robert E. Lee (General of the Confederate army) use to say "its in Gods hands, and its all of Gods will' weather they would lose or win the civil war. As we know now it was Gods will to free black men and women from slavery. And although there many reasons for the Civil War, rather directly or indirectly most were because of slavery.
